Three More Fast and Furious Movies in the Pipeline Despite Paul Walker’s Incident

The unfortunate death of Paul Walker, one of the stars of Fast and Furious, seems to be no excuse from keeping fans happy as Fast and Furious 7 won’t be the latest installment of the series according to the Universal Studios.

Yes, you read that right, the F&F saga will have at least 10 titles in total. And that’s not just a rumor, but comes straight from Universal Studio’s Donna Langley who got interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter recently.

“We think there's at least three more [movies]. Paul is, and always will be, an integral part of the story. But there are many other great characters, and it's also an opportunity to introduce new characters. I think it's still a growing franchise,” Donna explained. “... So we think that there's more to mine there. But we're of course very mindful about fatigue.”

As you’ve probably seen in the latest trailer, Fast and Furious 7 is by far the craziest movie in the saga. Comparing it to the first one, where most of the action was revolving around custom cars and a way to make extra cash, this one appears to be spinning the other way around - ball as much cash as you can and defeat some bad guys on the way while using some cool cars to pull off the most counter-physics maneuvers ever.

Playing the franchise game

That’s the way of the franchise unfortunately. Take a simple subject, like racing for example, add in more factors to thicken plot and milk the cow for as long as possible if people still watch it.

Why do people still crowd the cinemas to see F&F movies that are almost looking like any other kind of action movie? It’s hard to say for sure, but car chases and guns have come hand in hand since the 1968 Bullit. The public likes to see things out of the ordinary just for the fun of it. Add up a charismatic cast and you got the recipe for success.

The arcade gaming genre works in the same ways and look how many gamers prefer it over simulators. We don’t really like to watch/play things we can actually do in real life.

Still think 10 Fast and Furious movies are a bit too much? Well, the SAW franchise at least used pretty much the same arguments to put out no less than 7 titles and could put out at least one more in the near future. There are 23 James Bond movies shot over 40 years. If this still isn’t enough, China has given us Wong Fei Hung, which has 90 titles released over 50 years.
