That is what happened to thousands of motorists returning home after the Bank Holiday weekend, who were trapped for three hours on May 26 on UK's M25.
The road was blocked after three cattle escaped from the horsebox in which they were being transported. The horse trailer overturned at about 7 pm on Monday and that was when the two bulls and a heifer ended up wandering free on the road. The cause of the accident was unclear.
The motorway was closed by the police in both directions, between junctions five and six near Sevenoaks, Surrey, in order to let the authorities safely capture the escaped cattle. The two bulls bolted into the fields nearby, but the heifer wandered across all six lanes of the carriageway.
Until the heifer was eventually sedated by vets and taken back to her owner's horsebox, motorists trapped in the three-mile queue left their cars to take a closer look at the cause of their inconvenience.
The road was eventually reopened at 9.40pm, but the two bulls were left in the field overnight, due to be collected by officials the following day.
“We had to close the motorway in both directions because the cattle were wandering all over the carriageway, climbing over the central barrier,” a Highway Agency spokesman said for the Daily Mail. “Being the end of the Bank Holiday, the roads were particularly busy, so it was not a good time for this to happen. But it did mean there was quite an audience.”
