Three Boeing 747 Lying Around a Malaysian Airport Are Searching for Their Owners

Imagine you're reading your morning newspaper while drinking your hot, steaming coffee and the "Lost and Found" category is up next. Among wallets, credit cards or whatever people misplace these days, there is a probability to read about three abandoned cargo Boeing 747 airplanes that are lying around on the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, parked on three separate bays.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd. is looking for the owners of those aircrafts and it has even placed an advertisement in the nation’s best-selling English daily, Star Newspaper, for them to come and collect them. If nobody comes within 14 days, the planes will be sold under the Civil Aviation Regulations 1996, and the money raised will be used to cover expenses such as parking fees and other charges.

According to Zainol Mohd. Isa, general manager of Malaysia Airports Sdn., the planes have been lying around the airport for more than a year now, and although the airport’s officials have been in touch with the so-called owners, they haven’t responded to take away the planes. He also explained his decision to sell the planes if no one redeems them saying that the airport wants to use those parking bays. No official data was released about the parking fees and other charges owed.

It is known that at least one of the planes belongs to an Icelandic company, Air Atlanta Icelandic, which leased the jets to the cargo unit of Malaysia Airlines. The other two were leased to MASkargo, but the contract expired in 2010 and they had no further involvement with these planes since then.

Boeing stopped the production of the 200F series in 1991 and a cargo airplane from that year costs somewhere near 13.1 million dollars, but an older model could be just a tenth of that sum, according to Bloomberg.

The newest 747 model from Boeing, the 747-8 freightliner, costs about 378 million dollars before any kind of discount.
