Thompson Considers Sabbatical 2009

James Thompson might have brought Honda their first win in the FIA World Touring Car Championship this year, but that didn't change the Japanese manufacturer's mind to withdraw from the sport at the end of 2008. After ceasing financial backing for their F1 operations, Honda decided to pull the plug on their WTCC programme as well.

That leaves Thompson without a race seat for 2009, as the British driver had signed a 3-year deal with N.Technology – the team that ran Honda's operations in the WTCC – before the start of 2008. With most works' teams having already secured their lineups for the new season, Thompson is looking at the possibility to spend the new season on the sidelines, waiting for a better deal for 2010.

“It's very disappointing to have your contract terminated in the last week in December, and I've made no progress since then. I believe I can still win a title in BTCC, WTCC or wherever, but it's unrealistic to expect people to be banging your door down just because you've won a few titles before,” said Thompson in an interview for autosport.com site.

“I'd be tempted if someone called me and offered me a drive in a good car in a good championship, but nothing yet. Maybe I'll just stay at home. That's better than going with a bad team, because racing for the sake of it is not good - you'll never win anything that way. can do a bloody good job for someone,” added the British driver.

Thompson finished last year as the 15th best driver of the FIA WTCC (driving a Honda Accord), clinching a race win at Imola in the closing stages of the season. His second podium appearance also took place at Imola, during Race 1 of the San Marino weekend.
