A Smart that was stolen and sunk in the harbor of Willhelmshaven, Germany, spent seven years abandoned until recently being removed from the water. After an auto tuner took it over, the car ended up on eBay. Not only did it sell, but the price is quite impressive.
The idea of selling the sea-shell-smart was rather a joke, but according to the seller the announcement ended up with 56 bids and 120,000 viewers. The proceeds of EUR 1,131 will be donated to the town’s food bank, but it’s still quite impressive anybody would pay that much for the city car. After all these years, the car was full of mud, with most of the body rusted and with the interior covered in brown shell.

It’s incredible. We expected a maximum of 100 euros and we have been overwhelmed with the strong response,” one of the sellers, Andreas Jager, told local reports.

The initial owner is still unidentified, but since Smart models are marketed globally, including in Asia, North and South America, Australia and in Europe it could have been anybody. He could have been Dutch for that matter. Why Dutch? Let us explain.

Since the finding was rather an accident, we’re pretty sure there is no phenomena going on in this perticular case. But this actually has happened before. About five years ago, local reports in Netherlands would claim there were several Smart cars being stollen and thrown in the canal.

Police have found that Dutch pranksters in Amsterdam have dumped dozens of the tiny two-seater cars into the city’s waterways.
