This Wooden Kinetic Sculpture Is in Fact a Penny-Farthing with Mechanical Legs

If you want to see how far imagination can go, you always look for people that have a lot of spare time to spend (or waste, depending on the case). Whether Ron Schroer from Jacksonville, Florida is one of those people is rather a subjective matter and we’re going to need your help to decipher that part.

I don’t know about you, but whenever is see these mechanical, man-made little legs that clump on the ground like some sort of robot-spiders, I think of those alien machines in Stargate SG-1 series called the Replicators. In case you forgot about them, we’ll take the time to remind you.

The Replicators are antagonistic self-replicating machines that consumed both alloys and technologies of the most advanced civilization nearby. Doing so, they would replicate and construct themselves and their progeny according to their “victims”.

It’s not the first type of a man-made machine that uses some sort of wooden-legs that are working collectively to propel a vehicle, but we can’t quite get used to seeing them yet.

Ron’s Big Wheel incarnation was specially created for the 2014 OneSpark fare, an annual crowdfunding festival held in Downtown Jacksonville, Florida. What you see in the video below is some sort of an futuristic penny-farthing. It has mechanical legs with small wheels instead of a single rear wheel, thus the peculiar appearance.

Other than the fact it totally creeps us out, we have to admit there clearly is a lot of craftsmanship to it worth mentioning. It’s the brainchild of a man that described himself this way: “I’m just a boring old fart who, after going through chemo, realized if I didn’t let some of my crazy out before I passed I’d be disappointed with myself.”

Enjoy and don’t freak out!
