While everybody seems to buy smartwatches these days (as a matter of fact, Apple sells more Apple Watch units than the entire Swiss watch industry combined), there are companies out there that are still trying to create unique timepieces based on innovative approaches.
This is the case of BackFire, a company that’s now seeking crowdfunding for an automatic watch that features its very own transmission system, as well as a body whose design is inspired by the Formula 1 halo.

A video showing how everything on the BackFire works reveals the transmission-inspired system, while also providing us with a closer look at the racing car design.

BackFire watches integrate automobile’s transmission system, using the imbalance of the auto rotor to initiate the movement of tires. Energy generated powers the automatic movement of the watch. This is the world’s first design with such powering technique,” the parent company claims.

BackFire says it turned to a design that consists of multiple layers, eventually trying to obtain a three-dimensional view that’s supposed to look both high-tech and luxurious. The rotating crown uses more Formula 1-inspired design cues, as it resembles the fuel cap used on race cars.

As for the other specs, the 47mm case is made from stainless steel and uses sapphire crystal for extra durability of the glass. Furthermore, it’s 5 ATM water-resistant and ships with 22mm genuine leather straps.

As far as the price is concerned, you probably don’t expect such a unique timepiece to be so affordable. While you can donate $100 without any reward “because you believe in it,” pledging $340 secures one BackFire watch with an individual number, one Italian leather strap, and two years of warranty.

At the time of writing, the funding goal has already been surpassed, as supporters donated over $20,000, a lot more than the $2,580 target. There are still some 23 days to go until the crowdfunding comes to an end.
