If the Internet isn't short on something, that's got to be renderings based on Tesla's latest and most polarizing design: the Cybertruck. And while people still discuss whether it's a stroke of genius or uglier than sin, everyone agrees on the overwhelming level of its weirdness.
But that's just potential customers speaking. For us, a new car is just something we would, we might, or we'd never spend some money on. For those in charge of governing a town or a region, a model such as the Cybertruck means potential money in the coffers.
Tesla has been looking for a site to build its new plant where the Cybertruck would be assembled, and it wasn't short on pretenders. Much like the various pitches that came from European countries back when the Berlin plant wasn't yet settled, several US states also tried to lure Elon Musk's company into investing in their territories.
So far, we don't know anything for sure. Reports claim it's a battle between Austin, Texas and Tulsa, Oklahoma. They also say the location should be more than halfway to the East Coast, which puts Tulsa slightly in front of the race. Regardless, we should know the company's decision by the end of this month, so the tension won't linger for long.
The representatives of these cities, however, did not remain idle - well, at least G.T. Bynum didn't, the mayor of Tulsa, who posted this picture of a Tulsa PD Tesla Cybertruck on Twitter together with a short text that read "If @Tesla and #Tulsa team up to change the world, it would only be right to #BuyLocal."
Not everyone is so crazy about Tesla opening a plant in their region, though. Some of the responses mayor Bynum got were less than positive, and most of them were in reference to the recent events at the Fremont plant and Musk's overall reaction to the health crisis we're still going through.
"This man has shown who he is at the core during this pandemic and you want him to bring that same mentality here?" read one of the messages from a certain Chandra Gray. "He has shown disregard for the health and safety of his factory workers in CA, defying county orders to remain closed and you want to bring that here?? NO THANK U!"
In the end, the decision will come based on very practical reasons such as better logistics and more favorable incentives, so the promise of a few Cybertruck orders from the Tulsa PD in itself isn't going to tilt the scales one way or another. But it does show the matter is on the authorities' minds, which is probably encouraging for Tesla. As for us, the rest of the world, we at least got to look at this well-made rendering of a convincing police truck.
