There’s always two ways to get an amphibious vehicle: you either buy a new luxury toy or you’re crazy enough to turn a road car into a boat. These brainiacs in New Zealand figured they could adapt an old Subaru Impreza into a fishing vessel. Sure, you could call it a Scubaru, but for some reason it rather reminds us of the landing crafts they used in World War II.
Landing crafts are exactly what you think they are, which is boats and seagoing vessels used to convey landing force from the sea tot the shore during an amphibious assault. Since the Normandy landings were the largest seaborne invasion in history, it’s only natural that we think of it when it comes to this watercraft.
Nevertheless, this Subaru Impreza has nothing to do with any warfare gear; it’s just an innocent piece of mechanic DIY-type of thing. As we said, this piece of auto was turned into an amphibious craft by Kiwis, who now decided to sell it. You’re going to have to go all the way to Franklin, Auckland, New Zealand to pick it up, but it doesn’t mean it’s not worth it.
Power comes from a four-cylinder, 2-liter petrol engine while the transmission is manual. In other words, you get enough features to enjoy a proper fishing time on a mildly sunny day. Even though the current owner has been driving/sailing with it without any certification, he claims that it can be attained.
“WOF [the document certifying that a light motor vehicle has passed a compulsory periodic inspection] will be attainable with a certification from the correct authorities. But before then, just keep it on the down low and avoid queen street and you will be good as gold,” the person who listed the vehicle explained.
The bidding has currently reached New Zealand Dollar 620 ($459) which is five bucks lower than what they asked for in the first place, so you should better hurry. That is, if you want to fish like a true petrolhead, of course.
