When you have tourists sending in videos with a car’s wing mirrors and window fittings melting off a vehicle during a heatwave in Italy, that is when you know global warming may be happening. There’s no need to panic, however, nobody was injured in the process. The plastic did drip off the auto and on to the tarmac, but it doesn’t mean it’s not scary.
The story sends us to Italy this time, the land where some say modern civilization started. Meet John Westbrook, a 48-year-old taxi driver from Folkestone, Kent, who was vacationing with his wife and son recently in Caorle, northern Italy. Things were fine until the killer heatwave hit the country with temperatures hitting 37 degrees Celsius (99F). At some point, things got that hot cars were literally melting.
Well, to be fully honest, the plural is not right, since it was just one, namely an older generation Renault Megane. So big was the surprise, the taxi driver from the UK felt the need to film the vehicle. As you can see in the footage below, the lights, wing mirrors, and window fittings were melting off the car.
“The car was parked parallel to the beach and had been there for a few days - it was just the pure heat of the sun beating down on it that made it melt. We drove past and just couldn’t believe what we were seeing. Bits of the car were literally dripping off onto the road,” Westbrook told the Daily Mail. “Even bits of the bumper were melted and the wing mirrors were starting to buckle. I guess the moral of the story is don’t trust French cars,” he added.
Well, we don’t know about that last part, but we have to admit seeing that a car melts in the sun inevitably makes you wonder about the quality of the materials. On the other hand, we should mention that the heatwave in Italy was that bad 100 pensioners reportedly lost their lives because of it.
