The mid-engine Corvette rumor mill has been brewing for so long that the result might even turn out to bear a different name altogether.
Until recently, the sports car's moniker was thought to be Zora, in the memory of Corvette and racing lover Zora Arkus-Duntov, who helped introduce the small-block V8 engine to the Corvette back in 1955.

The latest rumors were talking about not one, but two new Corvettes to arrive in 2018. The C8 would be a true replacement for the current C7 generation and a mid-engine version to take on the Ferrari 488 GTBs and McLaren 720S' of the world, possibly named Zora.

As it happens, there is an even crazier rumor nowadays, and it not only involves Chevrolet but Cadillac as well. According to some GM insiders, Cadillac is also working on a mid-engine flagship, and its launch may take place as early as 2018, just when the mid-engine Corvette was supposed to emerge officially.

That said, the supercar spotted by our spy photographers testing in a General Motors proving ground might either be one of two things or both. In layman's terms, we could be either looking at a Corvette C8-based mid-engine Zora or an early Cadillac supercar mule.

As some of you may remember, Cadillac showed a massively powerful mid-engine concept car as soon as 2002, in the shape of the Cien concept. It was powered by a naturally aspirated V12 that offered no less than 750 hp, and it even had appearances in the movies The Island and Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Sadly, the sculpted body made of aerogel composite never transformed into a production vehicle, but the year 2018 could change all that.

It is not yet certain if the mid-engine Corvette will remain single or will also get a Cadillac brother, but if it happens, it would surely help with Johan De Nysschen's ambitious plans for the Cadillac brand.

Either way, the prototype spied alongside what looks like a 2018 Corvette ZR1 will be powered by a mighty V8 rumored to be twin-turbocharged, paired with a transaxle automatic transmission and rear-wheel-drive. Expect more info about it in the upcoming months.
