Toyota engineers are a special breed – working to perfect the reliable, affordable and versatile vehicles for the masses at day, while at night they continue to work on crazy cars like this one here in the pictures.
This hand-made concept vehicle has been made by the Toyota Engineering Society and has been unveiled at this year's Tokyo Auto Salon under the name of the TE-Spyder 800. And, yeah, it is a plug-in hybrid.
The compact sportscar appears to be something inspired by the MR2 and the Prius at the same time. It uses the legendary affordable sportscar's lightweight mid-engine configuration and its powered by the same hybrid drivetrain found on the Toyota Prius. The vehicle tips the scale at exactly 1,000 kg, and the battery pack has been located in the central tunnel, while the hybrid system has been tuned a bit to offer the car a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 5.8 seconds.
It's a pretty nice-looking and fun vehicle to drive and who knows, maybe Toyota will decide to give the GT 86 a smaller brother at some point based on this concept.
