This Is the First Genesis SUV, the GV80

Starting this year, Hyundai’s luxury spin-off Genesis is joining the SUV race with the launch of the GV80. Previewed since late last year, the car made its official debut this week in Seul as one of the most important models the carmaker ever made.

As the brand’s first SUV, the GV80 does not bring only increased dimensions compared to the sedans we are used to, but also a number of other firsts, like the fitting of a six-cylinder diesel engine, the addition of electronically controlled suspension with road preview, and a supposedly revolutionary active noise control system.

Called Road-Noise Active Noise Control (RANC), the tech is supposedly a first in the world and does its thing not by employing physical hardware, but by generating sound waves of opposite phases to nearly cancel out road noise.

Based on a rear-wheel-drive platform and inspired by the GV80 Concept shown at the 2017 New York Auto Show, the GV80 will be offered in South Korea with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine that develops 278 ps. Later in the year, two turbocharged gasoline engines will join the range.

The car is packed with driver-assist technologies, ranging from smart cruise control (a particular variant that is also said to be a first in the industry), to driver attention alert warning. There are also ten airbags, one of which located between the front occupants.

“GV80 represents the essence of the innovative spirit of Genesis,” said in a statement William Lee, Executive Vice President and Global Head of the Genesis Brand. “As we launch GV80, our first luxury flagship SUV, we simultaneously open a new chapter for Genesis.”

Starting this month, the car will be made available to South Korean customers, and people in other markets of the world are expected to get it by the end of the year.
