Bruce Dietzen, an American entrepreneur, has developed a car made from cannabis hemp.
Naturally, only the body of the car is made out of the material, and its inventor claims that it is stronger than fiberglass. Furthermore, the founder of Renew Sports Cars also says that cannabis hemp is the toughest plant-based material.
Unlike other lightweight solutions for car building, Mr. Dietzen claims that this material is carbon-neutral, and could be the future of America’s automotive industry.
Mr. Dietzen is currently touring the United States of America in a bid to showcase his creation and convince lawmakers to allow planting and growing the plant, which is currently illegal to grow in most US states.
Along with touring the USA, the entrepreneur has also made a few documentaries, and one of them is called “Hempsters: Plant the Seed.”
The legalization of industrial hemp is many years away, as legislators do not trust the right intentions of some, and still focus on the problems others can cause by cultivating this plant.
Dietzen also claims that Henry Ford envisioned a world where he could use industrial hemp to make body panels for his cars, CW33 News reports. In recent years, automakers have begun experimenting various ways to make lightweight, tough, and eco-friendly body panels for their vehicles. Since growing cannabis hemp is illegal in most countries, automakers have not had the chance to experiment with this material.
On the other side of things, filling crops of a “new” plant to build cars might not be as eco-friendly as this entrepreneur claims it will be. After all, it will require regular watering, as well as attention from its farmers, and farm fields that will grow hemp for industrial purposes will have to source enormous quantities of the stuff to allow automakers to create body panels out of the material.
So far so good, right? Well, not exactly, as the farming space used to grow the plant could be taken away from other plants, especially vegetables, which could raise the price of these commodities in the long run.
