This Is It: BMW X6 M Versus Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe

We’ve seen two interesting comparisons between the BMW X6 M and the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe, and so far, the BMW won both of them, easily. That might seem suspicious to some, so we decided to post yet another showdown between the two, but this time, in a more... “compact” format.

The BMW X6 M and its new rival from Stuttgart are going at each other’s throats on the drag strip this time. This is the one scenario that interests the most people and this will sway most of them. Since actually driving on a track and comparing lap times is hard to do (not only because of logistics but skill as well), drag races will tell most buyers exactly what they want to know.

Looking at the numbers, the Mercedes should have it in the bag. The GLE Coupe is available in two AMG guises. The “standard” model has its 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 tuned to 557 HP and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque, while the S version takes things up a notch to 585 HP and 760 Nm (561 lb-ft) of torque.

At the same time, the Merc uses a 7-speed gearbox and all-wheel drive to get off to a good start, covering the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in just 4.2 seconds. The one thing that works against it is its weight, as it tips the scales at 2,350 kg (5,180 lbs).

On the other hand, the BMW isn’t all that light either at 2,265 kg (4,993 lbs), but it does have the upper hand in this regard. Under its hood hides a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 making 575 HP and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque, hooked up to a new 8-speed gearbox and xDrive all-wheel drive system. The acceleration time is the same as for the AMG 63 S version, at 4.2 seconds.

The two seem rather well matched up in theory, but how does that translate into tangible results? Let’s take a look.
