This Is How the new BMW S55 Engine Sounds Like

Up until now we only had a few chances to hear the sound of the new S55 engine that will be powering the new M3 and M4 models from BMW. However, most of them were brief or recorded with bad cameras so we couldn’t actually get a grip of exactly how the new cars will sound like.

Luckily, in the meantime, BMW launched the new M4 Convertible and along with it a couple of videos showcasing its stance on the road. This time, these clips were filmed by the Germans themselves and they really show everything we wanted to know about this car. Including the exhaust sound.

A lot of people claimed that replacing the naturally aspirated V8 engine in the old cars would be a mistake, no matter what other unit would take its place as long as it didn’t have the same architecture. While they might be right, we dare any one of them to watch the video below and tell us that this new engine doesn’t sound good.

It’s an inline 6-cylinder, a return to the perfect recipe the Germans developed a long time ago when they fitted the first M3s and M5s with such units, with different displacements, of course. This one has only 3 liters but it’s fitted with two turbochargers and makes 431 HP and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. The sound it creates though is…. We’ll let you fill in the blank.

PS: there’s even a better exhaust available for these new cars, through the M Performance Parts catalog
