This Is How the DS-7 Crossback Driver Attention Monitoring System Works

For decades Europe has been at the front of the pack when it comes to making its cars safer. Helped by the rapid advancement in technology, the European Union is among the early adopters of features like start and stop, or automated emergency services calls. And by early adopters, we mean enforcers.

The busy European roads are at times slaughterhouses, with over 100,000 people fatalities reported each year. The causes of so many deaths are diverse, and there’s not much that can be done for some of them. For others, technology is here to help.

From 2022, all new European Union-made cars will have to be equipped with driver monitoring technology. That is the suite of features that helps the car know when drivers are not paying attention, and alert them of the situation.

Some carmakers already have such a technology in place, although it is far from being widespread, and is mostly limited to higher-spec models. DS, for one, is such a carmaker, and its DS 7 Crossback is fitted with such a tech.

In this case, the monitoring system relies on driver-facing infrared cameras mounted above the steering wheel and at the top of the windscreen. These two cameras constantly scan the driver for signs of tiredness, which mostly has to do with the nature or amplitude of the movement of the eyes, eyelids or neck.

At the same time, a vehicle position monitoring system determines where the car is in relation to road markings. If it detects unexpected steering movements, it warns the driver by emitting audible chimes.

“Distracted and tired drivers are a serious safety threat on roads across the UK and it is the cause of thousands of accidents a year, with some ending in fatalities,” said in a statement Vince Clisham, DS head of product.

“This serious issue can benefit from the latest technologies available, which is why we have made our DS driver attention monitoring technology available across the range on DS 7 Crossback.”
