This Is How the 2016 BMW 7 Series Car Phone Looks Like

China is currently the biggest car market in the world, despite the recent problems experienced on the stock market that made some pause their vehicle buying plans. In terms of sales, the Chinese market overtook Germany and the US and is now sitting at the number one spot in BMW’s charts.

The new 7 Series was launched in the Asian country last week and it is now available for both ordering and deliveries. Therefore, visiting a local dealership might land you one. However, as it has been brought to our attention, the new flagship comes with a car phone too these days, something we haven’t seen for a while.

The guys from Car News China claim that’s the case and they’ve even posted photos of it online to show us that this is for real. Leaving aside their mocking of the whole thing, you might find this option rather useful. Yes, this is an optional feature, and yes, the phone does look like that in 2015. We asked BMW for an explanation and, as it turns out, this is not a China-only option.

In Germany, you can get it for €830 and it is described as a “rear-seat telephone that allows you to call in HD voice quality. ‘Strictly private call’ possible.” That’s more than intriguing if you ask us and it's because of the last part, the one that includes the “strictly private call” mention and not the fact that you get an actual phone inside the car.

The 6NB optional feature has been around for decades and has been offered on various cars for quite some time now, not only on the 7 Series. You could even buy it on a 1 Series starting with 2008 if you would so please.

What BMW means by “strictly private calls” is still a mystery right now, though, and we're waiting for a reply from the Germans to set things straight. As soon as they clear the waters, we'll let you know with an update.

On another note, the 7 Series is quite expensive in China, starting at CNY1.18 million ($187,000 at today’s exchange rates) for the 740Li model and going up to CNY1.98 million ($313,000 at current exchange rates) for the 750Li version. These are also the only two available right now.
