This Is How Almost All M Cars From 1972 to 2012 Sound Like – Video

The BMW Motorsport division hasn’t been around forever, you know. As a matter of fact, it was first introduced to the world back in the 1970s and since then, the products they have put together have taken the world by storm.

It wasn’t the performance of the cars that set them apart (heck, there are some cars out there even today that will blow M models out of the water) but it was the bipolar character they had. They were usable on a daily basis, and you could also take them to the track and race on any given day, without worrying about getting home without your groceries.

This is what made M automobiles the legends they are today and gave them the status they enjoy amongst other, lesser cars. The history of the Motorsport division begins with the 3.0CSL, a model that is still regarded as a significant breakthrough, over 40 years later.

In its most hardcore version, the kind that used to be raced in various events around the world, this thing used to have up to 850 HP at its disposal and the people driving them were a bit crazy, to say the least. Don’t think that they had the safety features we have today. Oh no, most of the time it was just them, the engine, the gearbox, some roll cage built around them and a couple more scraps of metal. That was about it.

Now, over four decades later, people still admire what this division created and in this regard, we found a video on Youtube, showcasing almost all the M models ever built and how they sound. It’s really an enthralling trip down memory lane, especially for those old enough to remember the 3.0CSL.

Unfortunately, some names have been left out, probably the most notable being the E39 M5, one of autoevolution’s favorites but even so, we can still get a pretty good idea of how cars used to sound and how they evolved to this day. Please, do turn up your volume and enjoy!
