BMW basically hit us upside the head when it announced that it will be making a comeback on the list of manufacturers that will be airing a commercial during the Super Bowl. This will be the first time in four years for the German company and it’s all for a higher purpose.
Leaving behind the huge chunk of cash that had to be paid for this to happen (rumors claim that the 60 second ad cost BMW roughly $9 million) the commercial itself was released already on Youtube.

Called ‘Newfangled Idea’ it focuses on two characters that back in 1994 were discussing this new ‘internet’ craze and what it represents as it was a completely new concept. The same can be said about the i3 today.

The concept behind the car is to create it and run it as eco-friendly as possible. In this regard, the carbon fiber used in its construction is made using hydropower while the car itself is assembled in Leipzig using energy from windmills, all in the effort of making a smaller print on the environment.

Then there’s the running of the car itself that can be done nearly free. BMW offers charging stations that can be installed at your home and that use solar polar to recharge your car. If that’s not eco-friendly, what is?

As for the characters in the ad, they’re played by journalist Katie Couric and ex co-host of The Today Show, Bryant Gumbel and both of them claim to have had plenty of fun shooting this thing. Don’t believe me? Check out the behind the scenes video posted after the commercial, below. Then let us know what you thought of the ad.

Editor’s Note: I’m a little disappointed to be honest because since the airing time costs so much, I expected something more. Compared to what we've seen last year, this is not on par with my expectations.
