Some petrolheads might recognize Sbarro as a small Swiss high-performance replica and sportscar maker, other might know its founder as one of the greatest designers in the industry. This piece is about Espera, the automotive design and mechanics school whose students often participate in creating famous models. The amazing concept in question is one of those vehicles.
Is it a futuristic concept that lends classic features from the old-school hot rods? Is it a hot rod enriched with Tron Legacy looks? Call it whatever you want, there’s clearly more than one approach to it. Before we take a closer look, however, we need to remind you that The Sbarro Eight Concept has been around for more than two years now, being first showcased at the Paris Auto Salon in 2012.
We still believe its design is quite mind blowing and once again proves that they do make ‘em like they used to. A brainchild of the students of Espera Sbarro Montbeliard school of design, it combines styles frequently found in the hot rod culture with features from the famous Stealth Bomber. It’s a peculiar creation that looks exactly as it should, different than any other car in its class.
The curvy metal body of the regular hot rods were traded for a jagged design, a rule changer that modifies the game itself. It took them just 40 days to build it from ground up and they used a 3.2-liter twin turbo Maserati V8 to bring it to life.
According to Speed Hunters, who recently had a closer look at the car, the engine came from a scrapped car Sbarro himself found and develops a decent 368 horsepower sent straight to the rear wheels. Some custom features such as OZ wheels and Michelin Pilot Sports tires have also been added. Nevertheless, most of the vehicle's parts - which includes a tube-frame chassis to which a fiberglass skin is attached, door panels made of wood with leather pull straps - are manufactured in house.
It's just like we said, Batman would be jealous.
