Just like 2020 in its entirety, this Christmas is a little different. With social responsibility still in full swing, we should refrain from big gatherings. And, oddly enough, a SEMA build from Toyota is giving us merry ideas of overlanding in the woods for the night - just to be able to stay as close as possible to every Christmas tree out there.
Bundling SEMA and the Christmas holiday in the same sentence is certainly odd. But Toyota has presented the Tacoma-based TRD-Sport Trailer so close to the winter night of wonders that we couldn’t help but imagine taking it for a ride in the snowy wilderness.

The Japanese company had probably planned a big roster of unveils for this year’s edition of SEMA. But just like many other automotive events, the Las Vegas show turned into an online event. So, the brand probably decided it was better off delivering the novelties in waves. The first one came in November, just as is customary.

But the second one – consisting of the 2021 GR Supra Sport Top and this camper-inspired TRD-Sport Trailer concept, arrived just prior to the Christmas celebrations. And we couldn’t help but take a second look at the Tacoma-derived creation, especially since Toyota also concluded its trailer campaign with the final video installment (embedded below).

So, what we have here is a “creative basecamp solution concept vehicle allowing overlanding explorers to quickly set up camp and then continue on their remote adventure.” Basically, it’s a camper trailer that was created from the bed of a Tacoma – a remarkably interesting, though not necessarily original, solution.

That’s because it has been tried before – even Toyota officials caught wind of it at a dedicated event (the Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona). Of course, with the backing of a global conglomerate, the TRD-Sport Trailer looks just about ready to enter series production at a moment’s notice.

Unfortunately, there’s no word if Toyota will turn this one-off into a future reality. Not making it would be a shame, because it does pack just about everything an overlanding enthusiast would need. The trailer rolls on 17-inch TRD Pro wheels wrapped in General Grabber X3 tires and has a custom BASF paint that mimics the Tacoma-available Cement Gray.

Inside, the TRD-Sport Trailer fits numerous Rigid LED accessory lights, multiple Yakima SunBelt light strips, lots of outdoor gear (from fishing poles to wading boots), Yakima four-person tent, a custom-built toilet, a refrigerator, cookware, a hot water heater, and other essentials.
