Range anxiety is the reason Elon Musk's Tesla Motors will release an updated 6.2 software version for the Model S. Range anxiety is also one of the reasons why some EVs have range extenders...
...but range anxiety is about to be die in style thanks to a start-up called Star Engines. In brief, Star Engines hired skilled engineers in an attempt to change the paradigm of combustion engines.
They drew inspiration from the Wankel engine while trying to rewrite the industry's basics, and the result is the Jerr.e. Although the name would fit a robot, Jerr.e is small, low-weight rotary engine. And yeah, the invention is patented.
Besides being shaped and sized like a jerrycan - thus having quite compact dimensions that won't turn storing it into a headache - this peculiar range extender does what it is supposed to do. That is, recharging your EV when the battery is low, and there's no such thing as a charging point in sight.
However, you'll have to find a gas station because this is essentially an ICE (internal combustion engine) that acts as a generator. I know, you'll still have to rely on finding a gas station but since these are way bigger in numbers than charging points in some areas, the Jerr.e could prove useful. Moreover, it has a 5-liter fuel reservoir and weighs 23 kilograms (50 lb), so EV owners will also workout a bit while handling the device.
But come on, we dare you to name a more elegant and classy solution than this one. Exactly, there is none. Despite not giving away more of Jerr.e's specs, Star Engines used a BMW i8 photographed by Gijs Spierings to debut their product, which makes the photo gallery even more exciting.
