For regular folks, a man cave is, at best, one room of the house where they’re allowed to do whatever they want, or perhaps a garage or a guest house. For one homeowner in Austin, Texas, it’s a three-story garage slash car museum inspired by the film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
First of all, a few words for the younger readers. The 1986 rom-com Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is considered a classic, but it’s also the movie with one of the most iconic Ferrari scenes in the history of Hollywood. A simple search online for famous Ferraris in movies will include it in the results, without fail.

And it’s with good reason: a Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder comes to a tragic and unexpected end in it, during a fit of rage from Ferris’ good pal Cameron, who takes umbrage with his father’s obsession with cars. This Ferrari, in particular. You can see that scene in the video at the bottom of the page; it also offers a glimpse at the garage in which the Spyder is housed.

For the record, the Spyder wasn’t a real Ferrari but a replica. And yes, it was destroyed during production, when it went flying through the window.

Because this homeowner outside Austin, Texas, is a huge Ferris Bueller fan, the team working on his remodel thought of incorporating his favorite movie into his garage. So, over the course of two years, Mark Ashby Design, Dalgleish Construction and Shiflet Group Architects, built what is now called the Dream Garage.

It looks very much like the car garage in the movie, with two, very notable exceptions: it doesn’t include a Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder (bummer) and is even more luxurious. As such, it is guaranteed to blow your mind.

“I knew the homeowner had an affinity for the ‘80s, so the goal here was to tip our hats to the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and luxuriate on that theme,” Michele Lorenz, the creative director at Mark Ashby Design, explains in an interview with the Robb Report.

They built the garage over three stories, so as to allow the owner to house and properly display his impressive collection of cars. It includes both new and classic models of BMWs and Porsches, and at least one motorcycle. At least, from what is visible in photos released publicly. The exact value of the collection has not been disclosed to the media, but reports note that it’s in the multi-million-range.

The entire feel of the place is very ‘80s, from the use of geometric shapes in the wallpaper and carpets, to the use of plush read leather sofas and armchairs, vintage art and custom finishes with a retro design. Behind the appearance of old-school design is state-of-the-art technology, with an impressive sound system and a lift that takes the cars from the basement to the mezzanine among the most outstanding.

The place is also packed with rare and restored art, Andy Warhol wallpaper, and secret compartments, like a large closet behind a wood-paneled wall. Ferris himself would best describe it as “so choice.” A custom neon sign that reads “Live for the journey, not the destination” in the owner’s own handwriting hangs in one of the rooms, for a more personal – and modern – touch.

The remodeling of the garage alone took 2 years, as noted above. The garage is on a four-acre estate and, because this is private property that’s not for sale (as of the time of press) details are scarce for the obvious reasons. Just assume that what you can see in the photos in the gallery is merely scratching the surface of this Dream Garage.

If there ever was a man cave to make you choke with envy, this is probably it. A true-to-theme garage should have included that Ferrari, but it’s a work of art nonetheless.
