This Corsa-e Rally Is the Meanest-Looking Opel on the Track

Over the years, German carmaker Opel has toyed with the idea of an electric car several times, but it was not until the launch of the Corsa-e that the company has truly entered the segment. Based on this car, Opel announced back in August the Corsa-e Rally, a model it claims is the world’s first electric rally car.

The vehicle is not scheduled for its official debut on the track until summer 2020, but to get potential customers hyped about it, Opel will be presenting it next weekend (October 18-19) at the 2019 DRM season finale in Bavaria.

“Until now the German rally scene was able to read about the Opel Corsa-e Rally and admire the vehicle for the first time at the official world premiere at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt – and now we are pleased to present our show car to the rally teams at the DRM season finale,” said in a statement Jörg Schrott, Opel Motorsport Director.

“Some potential participants, some of them from abroad, will travel to the ADAC 3-Städte Rallye specifically to see the vehicle and learn more about our forward-looking concept on site.”

The Rally version of the Corsa-e packs the same 50 kWh battery fitted on the street version, and electric motors that develop the same amount of power: 136 hp and 260 Nm of torque, enough for naught to 62 acceleration time of 8.1 seconds.

What sets this car apart from its regular sibling is the lighter body, integrated roll cage for the protection of the driver, and underbody shield for the protection of the car. Quick-release systems for the hatch and hood have also been fitted, as was a fire extinguisher for emergencies.

The Corsa-e Rally will go out and try and prove its worth next year in a season that will last for eight events and will pass well into 2021.
