Imagine that. Buying a Camaro ZL1 with the 1LE Track Performance Package for the princely price of $69,996 before options, driving 48 miles from the showroom, then bang! The car is a total wreck, listed on Copart at a lot in Oregon with a starting bid of $27,500.
At the time of writing, the highest bid is $20,300 for the blue-painted pony with the LT4 small-block V8 and rear-wheel drive. Coming with a salvage title, the car used to retail at $83,377 according to the Copart estimate. That’s great if you plan to use whatever remains for a project car, but nevertheless, don’t forget that $27,500 is more than a basic ‘Maro.
Yanking the supercharged engine and six-speed manual is one thing, and looking at the bigger picture, other parts such as the alloy wheels, hood, door mirrors, rear wing, exhaust system, and touchscreen infotainment can be easily sold on eBay or Craiglist. The problem with that, however, is that $27,500 is more money than you’d pay for a new crate engine and transmission along with the auxiliary parts needed to make them work.
In other words, Copart might not have too much luck finding a fool with cash to burn. There are two days left to bid, and looking at the pony and muscle car segment sales in 2019, we wouldn’t hold our breath for a miracle. The truth of the matter is, it’s too much of a hassle to spend that kind of money for a wrecked Camaro with the pre-facelift.
The market is constantly adjusting, and over the past handful of years, consumers and automakers made it clear that crossovers, SUVs, and trucks are here to stay. Even Tesla has a workhorse in the pipeline in addition to the Model Y that puts the Y in S 3 X Y. Worse still for General Motors, the Camaro ZL1 1LE cannot match the Mustang Shelby GT500.
If you want to leave both in your dust, then there’s no mistaking the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye is the Detroit muscle for you.
