This Cadillac CT6 Is Sleeping with the Fishes in Shanghai

After the 2016 Cadillac CT6 started production in China in January, the marketing team from SAIC-GM decided to advertise the luxury sedan in an unconventional way. That is, by putting the Caddy in a fish tank in the middle of a Chinese shopping district.

Xintiandi is the name of the shopping district and it is one of the most important places in Shanghai, the largest city proper by population in the entire world. Curiously enough, Xintiandi is a car-free zone, but that doesn’t matter. According to local media reports, passersby can’t help but photograph the display and take selfies with the submerged Cadillac CT6 and the goldfish swimming in the humongous fish tank.

SAIC-GM hit the nail on the head with this stunt because goldfish are considered by the Chinese to bring good luck in business. That’s why many companies in China have goldfish swimming in large fish tanks in the reception hall. And a Cadillac luxury sedan is the go-to runabout of a successful businessman. Too bad competition from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi is stiffer than it was in the 1950s, the decade when Cadillac was synonymous with luxury.

Priced from 439,900 to 818,800 yuan ($67,275 to $125,220 at current exchange rates), the China-spec Cadillac CT6 competes against the long wheelbase versions of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, and Audi A6. As I’m sure you know, the Chinese are madly in love with long wheelbase sedans, which is why these models are manufactured and sold only in the Middle Kingdom.

The entry-level Cadillac CT6 is the 28T, which is motivated by a 275 horsepower 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. As for the range-topping model, that’s the all-wheel-drive CT6 40T. Its 3-liter V6 with 405 horsepower will have to suffice until Cadillac finishes development of an all-new twin-turbo V8. According to a recent report, the unit isn’t based on the LT1 V8, nor the supercharged LT4 of the Cadillac CTS-V.
