As we told you recently, BMW is seemingly trying to limit the tuning capability of its 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engines as time goes by. Earlier this year, we took a closer look at the new B58 plant and noticed that squeezing more power out of it than what the engineers decided it is the optimum amount will be a tricky task.
It’s an ongoing trend, though, one that can be noticed over the last few years. The N54 twin-turbo engine that replaced the traditional naturally aspirated 3-liter mills used up until its launch had tremendous potential, while the N55 that followed showed to be slightly less prone to tuning.
The B58 mill follows in those footsteps, but luckily, the car we’re about to show you doesn’t use it under the hood. This is an old, pre-facelift E91 335i Touring model that was tuned into oblivion.
Its owner replaced its twin-turbo setup with what looks like a single-turbo one thanks to a setup from COMP Turbosystem. The car now uses a Competition 6465 1.0 A/r twin-scroll turbo that had its boost taken up to 30 PSI or the equivalent of 2 bar. Thanks to it and other components, the owner claims that now his car makes 813 HP and 1024 Nm (755 lb-ft) of torque.
A custom manifold had to be built, as well as a custom downpipe that’s 3.5-inches in diameter with twin TIAL wastegates and a blow-off valve that is noticeable at one point in the video below. Other improvements include a JB4 remap for the ECU and a meth injection kit.
What’s more surprising is that the gearbox is claimed to be stock, which we find hard to believe considering the torque level the car now has. That’s if the clutch wasn’t upgraded too in the process, an issue nobody mentioned in the video or its description.
In the end, we find this to be more than a proper M3 Touring replacement since the Germans in Munich decided not to offer the M car in this guise.
