This BMW E34 5 Series Has a V12 Under the Hood and Can Be Yours for $7,999

The BMW 8 Series cars are loved by enthusiasts more for their looks rather than their performance. Yes, they had massive engines under the hood but they were definitely not the fastest cats on the road. And when you start thinking about their reliability, things start looking even worse for the Bavarians.

The internet is filled with testimonies from owners complaining about how much they invest in maintenance alone, leaving all other things aside. So why would one swap 4-liter V8 under the hood of their 5er for a V12 from an 850i? Well, maybe because of the sound it makes or maybe it’s because the M70 is a somewhat distant relative of the S70 unit used on the legendary McLaren F1?

We don’t really know, but this project sure looks like an ideal car for someone looking to invest a lot of money in all sorts of spare parts. The seller is asking $8,000 for it and you can check out the car in Burlington, Kentucky, if you’re interested.

The owner swapped the original engine with a V12 in North Carolina, at a shop called Korman Autoworks. Later on, he took that engine out and used it in a different E34 project only to bring in another V12 inside the car he’s selling today, this time a stock unit.

This second swap happened back in 2007 and was also done by professionals, this time in Cleveland by Koala Motorsport. That means it should be putting down around 300 HP and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque, which is rather terrible considering the outputs we’ve been getting used to.

The transmission is a good old fashion six-speed manual that is bound to give you some kicks along the road. As for other changes, you’d be glad to know that Dinan parts were used for the brakes and the suspension, while the interior is claimed to be mint.

The seller is also claiming that there are no rust problems whatsoever even though the body has over 100,000 miles on it, with the engine going for about twice as much. That means you should be expecting some issues with it at one point or another.

Anyway, if you’re interested in a unique car with a 5-liter V12 engine under the hood, this might be a bargain at $7,999. Just be sure to put some money on the side for miscellaneous operations as not any shop will be able to help you out.
