Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Ontario, Bisimoto Engineering is not to be taken lightly. Its latest project proves how Bisimoto can reinterpret a blast from the not-too-distant past.
Cue the Bisimoto BR911, a one-of-one creation, which wears a plaque that reads “commissioned in honor of Steve McQueen.” Indeed, that’s the King of Cool and indeed, the plaque wears the signature of his son, Chad McQueen.
According to Bisimoto Engineering, this is a car that makes it easy to imagine the American actor “commissioning as his personal Porsche 911 if he were still with us.” Based on a 1980 Porsche 911, the BR911 will go under the hammer in August, courtesy of Mecum Auctions. Curious about the estimate? $135,000 to $175,000, with all proceeds benefitting the Boys Republic non-profit treatment community for troubled youngsters. And good golly, the listing tells that this restomod is offered at no reserve.
Bisi Ezerioha of Bisimoto had chosen to part ways with his jaw-dropping creation this way for a very simple reason. When McQueen was just a young rebel without a cause, he got into an altercation with his not-too-kind stepfather. After that episode with the man McQueen regarded as “a prime son of a bitch”, he was sent off to Boys Republic, a community the critically acclaimed actor held in high regard for helping him turn his life 180 degrees.
The custom air-cooled 911 featured in the adjacent gallery is laden with exclusive details that make it look like a late 1960s Porsche 911. If you pop the hood, however, you’ll find a 3.6-liter flat-six with 316 horsepower on tap, a similar unit to those used by the 964 and 933 generations of the 911. Best of all? The six-cylinder powerplant breathes out through a Formula 1-inspired exhaust system with Helmholtz pulse chambers.
My favorite detail regarding the Bisimoto BR911, however, is the seats. Hand formed from bare aluminum, the racing buck seats are a work of art in their own right.
