If you happen to travel to Colorado or any other U.S. areas known to have wild bears, remember this: it’s always best to lock your car than be sorry afterwards that you didn’t.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has released a video that proves that. It shows 2 deputies releasing a bear from what looks like a Subaru Impreza, in which it had locked itself by accident. The bear saw half a banana in the cup holder and it was incentive enough to get inside the vehicle. Yes, it had been left unlocked.
Once the bear accidentally locked itself inside, it completely trashed the interior. Deputies show that on video, after letting the bear out with a long string tied to the door. Everything has been shredded to pieces, as the bear panicked at not being able to get out. Prior to that, it had rummaged for more food, causing damage.
The warning is clear: remember to lock your car when you’re in areas with nosy wildlife, or risk having your car ruined by one such unexpected visitor. Also remember to keep food stuffs out of sight - and preferably out of the car altogether.
“We’ve often warned that leaving your car unlocked makes it easier for thieves to steal items, but, as we’ve now seen twice this past week, it also makes it easier for bears to climb in and make themselves at home,” the post accompanying the video reads.
“While this Yogi did not pack a pic-a-nic basket, he did enjoy the snacks he found juuuuuuuuuust right inside this car in Conifer before falling asleep. You can see from some of the damage that he left a half-eaten banana in the cub holder. So please make sure you goldilock your car to keep both thieves and bears from entering,” the text adds.
The bear ran away back home unharmed; neither deputy summoned to solve the crisis was hurt. The owner of the Subaru, though, must be regretting they moment they thought it was safe to leave the car unlocked.
