The electric bike segment is gaining popularity, with a little something to offer for all kinds of pockets. If yours happens to be of the deeper, more voluminous type, Coleen is here for you, with the beautiful, elegant and limited-edition Coleen x Aston Martin e-bike.
First things first, Coleen is a premium French e-bike maker. It sells electric bicycles that push the envelope in terms of design, while retaining a certain retro look to them, with incorporated displays and lights, a well-hidden battery and a standard 250W rear-wheel hub motor. That last option is not subject to change because of EU regulations.
Late last year, Coleen announced a surprise, limited-edition bike that would pay homage to one of the most beautiful automobiles ever created, the Aston Martin DB4.
“We have decided to honor one of the most iconic car brands, Aston Martin with its iconic model the DB4,” Coleen said at the time. “The curves are absolutely stunning thanks to a bodywork composed of welded aluminum panels and which are based on a tubular frame; this type of structure allows a lightness of the whole and an aesthetic finesse.”
That tribute bike is called Coleen x Aston Martin and was unveiled at this year’s CES. It is currently available for pre-orders directly via email or phone, with a €2,000 ($2,186) down payment. The final price was never made public, but the base model for a Coleen bike starts at $4,990 ($5,453), while the Composer edition, on which this one is based, starts at €5,990 ($6,546).
There is no difference between the Composer edition bikes and the Aston Martin tribute edition, save for the aesthetic element. Painted in Sanction Green, the racing Aston Martin shade of green, this elegant e-bike comes with a full carbon fiber frame and fork (built in France), and 650b wheels and Schwalbe 2″-wide tires.
Pulled by a belt drive that aims to fight grease and derailing, the bike features a 562 Wh removable battery hidden away in the downtube. A full charge takes about two and a half hours, and is good for 90+ kilometers (56 miles). Coleen guarantees 5 to 8 years of battery life with everyday use, or 500+ charge cycles.
Top speed is rated at 45 kph (28 mph), and Coleen promises “smooth and reactive motion thanks to power needs sensors,” which provides torque to handle even steep inclines. Regenerative braking technology allows you to juice the battery while braking, while the 4 levels of pedal-assist will help you safely and quickly navigate all types or urban environments, in conjunction with the progressive hydraulic braking system.
The entire bike weighs about 19 kg (42 pounds), so it’s on the light side. It’s also very smart and smooth: the 3.2″ fully-integrated display with Transflective technology comes with smart connectivity, so you can pair your bike to a dedicated app on your phone. Keyless start and anti-theft tech come as part of the package, and the app also allows you to track your rides, make calls and send texts, and monitor important stats.
A USB port is included for charging your phone on the go. Integrated front light and tailight (with brake lights) will make you visible on the road.
“Combining high-quality materials and a sleek design, we provide you the promise of a relaxed and safer ride,” Coleen says on the official website. “We have opted to work on state-of-the-art technologies to give you the best. A powerful motor, lightweight yet extremely robust materials, joined together as a performant e-bike.”
Each Coleen e-bike, regardless of edition, can be ordered with the €2,000 ($2,186) down payment, and comes with 2-year electronics warranty and 7-year frame / fork warranty. The Composer edition includes more customization options, like the addition of racks or pannier bags, which will significantly drive up the price from the starter €5,990 ($6,546) point.
That is to say, expect to pay a lot of money on the Coleen x Aston Martin limited edition piece. But it’s an undeniable suitable companion for your Aston Martin or, if you don’t have one (yet), a gorgeous e-bike that will make you stand out from the crowd.
