According to a few internet articles dated back to 2012, Tesla is responsible for creating the word "frunk," a combination between front and trunk.
You guys all know what I'm talking about. Performance vehicles that have the engine at the back or in the middle don't have enough luggage space and compensate with a tiny compartment under the hood. Porsche is famous for this feature, but the Model S has it too because its electric motors are small, mounted close to the wheels.
Anyway, practicality is not the most important feature when you design a V10 or V12 speed machine that will reach 60 mph in about 3 seconds. Being an Audi, the R8 is better, but only slightly.
The reason we're talking about this is because we've noticed a couple of interesting photos on Audi Forum Ingolstadt's Facebook page. They show the "official" luggage set designed by Audi Sport to fit under the front hood of the all-new R8.
We're not luggage specialists, but if it costs a whopping €7,500, it's probably made from the best materials known to man with the utmost attention to detail. Audi knows how to make quattro and turbo engines, not luggage. So for this project, they collaborated with an Italian specialist called Valextra. The fitted luggage is available in black or red.
But don't think you are getting the entire set for 7.5k. No, that's just for the rigid suitcase-like piece. There's a semi-rigid bag with zippers that costs €3,000 and a small bag (it's embarrassing for a man) that you can have for €300. For a guy patiently waiting to afford a second-hand GTI, that sounds painfully expensive, but if you just spent over €200,000 on the R8, it's probably not a big deal.
Other manufacturers provide fitted luxury for their space-impaired vehicles, including Jaguar for the F-Type. Fashion collections are sometimes also built around landmark vehicles, such as the new Bugatti Chiron.
