That is indeed a seriously modified body of an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, only that appearances can be deceiving and we are actually looking at a funky mule for an upcoming Maserati grand tourer.

As it happens, the GranTurismo replacement will not wear the Alfieri name, sadly, but some styling features of the namesake 2014 concept car will find their way on the new GT, which is hidden somewhere beneath this extraordinary looking mule.

When it went out of production at the end of 2019, the GranTurismo was expected to be replaced by a slightly smaller coupe powered by an assortment of twin-turbocharged V6 engines, but plans have changed and it seems that the GranTurismo nameplate will live on.

Both the GranTurismo and GranCabrio are expected to usher in a new wave of electrification for the storied 106-year-old Italian carmaker. In fact, the new GT will be the first Maserati to adopt an electric powertrain, which is set to consist of one electric motor powering the front axle and two for the rear, and it will be produced in Turin, Italy.

Branded Folgore, which is Italian for ‘lightning,’ the tri-motor setup will only arrive later in the model’s life cycle, and will then trickle down to other Maseratis, like the Levante, Quattroporte and Ghibli.

A lot wider but most of all longer, the Frankenstein prototype in these spy photos is most likely powered by a version of the Nettuno twin-turbocharged V6 that is found in the new MC20 supercar.

In other words, the Alfa Romeo connection is made not only thanks to the body it uses, but also the powertrain, since the Nettuno is also partly based on the 2.9-liter V6 in the Giulia Quadrifoglio.

There were also rumors about a 3.9-liter V8 based on Ferrari’s modular family of flat-plane screamers, but nothing has been officially confirmed.

Either way, all internal combustion engines powering the next GranTurismo and GranCabrio will be hybridized, with the tri-motor Folgore electric version being a separate version in its own right.
