Given the cult status the original Shelby Mustang have achieved, one might find it difficult to believe that the example in these images, which was recently rescued, is a genuine GT500. However, Atlanta-based specialist HB Mustang, which has taken the 'Stang away on a trailer, claims this is the good stuff.
As the company claims on social media, this 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was grabbed three days ago. And while the details surrounding this find are scarce, the state of the vehicle makes one thing clear, namely the fact that the muscle hero had been neglected for quite a while.
At least so far, we only have three pics of the Mustang, with these showcasing the exterior. And while we can't see the cabin or the motor, the said label states the vehicle did come with the proper firepower.
What did 1968 bring for the GT500? Well, Ford had only introduced the larger, big block-ready, redesigned Mustang for the previous model year. And Carroll Shelby fitted the 1967 model with a 428ci (7.0-liter) V8 rated at 355 hp and 420 lb-ft (569 Nm) of torque. In the spirit of the era, the motor could be mated to a three-speed auto or a four-speed manual.
And while you could have the said engine for the 1968 model, Shelby introduced the GT500KR halfway through the year. With its name standing for "King of the Road", this featured a new 428ci Cobra Jet V8. And, despite the engine being officially rated at the same 355 ponies, its real-world output actually sat at around 400 horses.
Returning to the example we have here, multiple Instagram users took to the comment section of the said label's various posts to ask if the vehicle is up for grabs. Sadly, it seems this machine has already been spoken for, but we can at least rejoice at the thought of this icon getting a new life.
