Having your car stolen sucks bad enough, but having it stolen with your purse and credits cards inside, and then hearing that the thieves went shopping on your dime is like adding insult to injury.
It happened just recently to one woman in Colorado Springs, Colorado, when she was at work. Thieves broke into her car and made away with the vehicle and her purse inside. Then, they went splurging on stuff using her credit card – and racking hundreds of dollars in bills.
The victim reported the theft to the police, but she didn’t stop here. She went and tracked every location the thieves visited and spent her hard-earned money at. As it turns out, they weren’t exactly sophisticated in their choices: they shopped for booze and baked goods, and for stuff at Home Depot.
However, they did splurge. At the Panera bakery, they spent $130, KKTV reports. The victim tells the media outlet even the owner was shocked when she saw this kind of bill for baked goods, but she didn’t think there was anything fishy happening.
A liquor shop owner wasn’t either. A woman came in and presented him with a credit card, which she said belonged to her mother. She showed him the mother’s ID, too, and then her own. The owner says this is quite common, so he didn’t think twice about it.
In retrospect, though, he understands some alarm should have gone off in his head. The woman was wearing a cap and a hood and made sure not to look directly into any of the surveillance cameras in the store. He wants her and her partner caught, too, because the money they spent is money he will never get, now that the victim reported the card stolen.
“Hopefully they get caught later and it'll cost them more than it was worth and they'll change their ways but I'm not holding my breath,” he says.
