We were shocked when we saw this, the Youngman L5 GT which is, according to what it says on the back of the car, ‘Engineered by Lotus’. It is a new car, based on the Proton Gen 2, which has been worked over by Chinese automaker Youngman, in order to make it look and feel different.
It gets a new grille, a mild body kit, revised bumpers and new rims. It is powered by a 1.8-liter engine, sourced from Mitsubishi (used to power the Lancer, among others), which pumps out 147 hp and 171 Nm of torque – it can be had with a five-cog manual or a four-cog autobox.

Now, what’s all the fuss about? Well the fact that this car has ‘Engineered by Lotus’ stuck to the back really bugs us. We all know the connection between Proton and the famed British sports car manufacturer, yet putting the Lotus name on the back of a car which will most likely turn out to be ‘not-so-good’ is not something which they should have allowed – it is still not too late.

Lotus had better get their act together, because if everybody starts saying their cars are engineered by Lotus, and they turn out to be ‘not-so-good’, then the image they have built over the years will suffer a great deal as a result. Youngman claim that Lotus actually took part in the development of the L5 GT – we doubt it.
