These Celebs Own Several Nice Cars but Can’t Drive Them

Imagine being able to buy any car you may fancy, no matter the price, actually buying it and then leaving it to someone else to drive because you can’t or won’t. Strange as it may seem, that’s a reality with many celebrities.

In showbiz, it’s not who you are or what you do that really, truly matters, but rather the impression you make. Thanks to social media and the industry’s marketing machine, all celebrities are forced (if that’s not too strong a term) to keep up appearances, and that includes shelling out for fancy rides even though they will sit in the garage or be occasionally taken out by your personal driver.

As it turns out, there are plenty of celebrities who don’t drive, either because they never got their driver’s license or because they decided it would be safer for them to be in the backseat. That is not stopping them from building their very own fleet of cars, which they occasionally flash on social media just for the fun of it.

Cardi B

Rapper Cardi B is one of these stars. The rapper bought herself a Lamborghini Urus and then posted the receipts online to show she paid in cash ($$$!), to silence the haters. At the time, she also owned a Bentley Bentayga, a Lamborghini Aventador S, a Mercedes-Maybach S-class and a Chevrolet Suburban, but she didn’t have a driver’s license to take out any one of them.

While filming for Carpool Karaoke with James Corden, Cardi admitted that she loved expensive cars but was only taking driving lessons then, in order to get her permit at a later date. Until then, she said, she would just be using the cars as props for her selfies.

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez seems like the kind of woman who does everything – and does it good. She’s a successful performer, actress, producer, television personality, fashion designer, you name it. She also has more bling and luxury items than most female entertainers, which only makes sense since she’s among the richest.

What JLo didn’t have until recently was the willingness to drive. In 2019, she got a previous-generation 911 Carrera GTS Cabrio from fiance Alex Rodriguez on her birthday and, when she took it for a spin, she admitted she hadn’t driven in 25 years – for a variety of reasons including her safety and convenience. Apparently, there is such a thing as being too busy to drive yourself.

Ricky Gervais

At one point, the British comedian was linked to Top Gear as Jeremy Clarkson’s replacement. Rumors about this made the rounds in the national media for weeks in a row, even prompting a response from Gervais himself: he would if he could, but he didn’t “even drive.” He also wouldn’t look as fabulously chic as Clarkson did in jeans and brogues, so he didn’t want to try.

Mariah Carey

Mariah is the least surprising celeb on the list. The woman doesn’t even walk on her own two feet if she can avoid it, so it would only make sense for her to be chauffeured around whenever she needs to be somewhere, dahling!

Still, during her 6-year- marriage to Nick Cannon, they would often exchange car gifts. Mimi owns, among other cars, a Rolls Royce Phantom Coupe, a Maserati Quattroporte, a Maybach 62 Luxury Sedan, a custom pink Porsche Cayenne, and a custom matte black Range Rover, but she uses a personal driver to get around.

A$AP Rocky

Rappers and flashy stuff go together like peanut butter and jelly. They have and love showing off their jewelry, designer clothes, designer pads and expensive supercars. The reality of it all, though, is that in many cases they don’t even own the stuff they get to parade around. A$AP Rocky is at the opposite pole: he owns all the cars he’s seen around in but, until recently, couldn’t drive any of them.

As per his own admission, he never got around to learning how to drive and swim. That didn’t stop him from starting to purchase cars once he became a star, and he eventually got his driver’s license. Until then, he used a personal driver to take him places.

J.K. Rowling

The author of the “Harry Potter” books many times a millionaire but she’s not divorced from reality. Her reality is that she sucks as a driver, so she’s better off leaving the driving for someone who’s better and who, in the process, will keep her alive while taking her from place to place. She owns at least a Rolls Royce Phantom and a Range Rover.

“Because I have no spatial awareness, can't work machinery & have a tenuous grasp on reality,” the sassy Brit wrote on Twitter a while back. “It's really best for everyone I don't drive.” Points for being honest about it.

Britney Spears

The pop star is perhaps the only one on this list who might want to drive but can’t. She’s regularly seen around in a Jeep or a Range Rover, but she’s always chauffeured, without fail. That’s because, for more than a decade (since 2008, to be precise), Britney is legally barred from driving. Prior to that, she was photographed in anything from Jaguars to Minis, smart cars and Mercedes-Benzes.

In 2008, she had a mental breakdown, highly publicized at the time. After shaving her head, attacking a paparazzo with an umbrella and locking herself in her bathroom with her kids to prevent a custody exchange, she was put under a conservatorship. Actually, there are 2 of them, one over her entire business and one over her personal life: the latter bars her from driving, making larger purchases, going out in public and even dating without approval from the conservator who, at this moment, is her dad.

This just goes to show that not all those who have money can or want to enjoy the pleasure of driving their own cars.
