According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, no less than 21,711 SUVs and CUVs from the 2011 - 2013 model years were stolen in the United States between January 1st, 2010 and December 31st, 2013. But the most amusing thing of the report is that the three most stolen sport utility vehicles are made by the same American manufacturer.
Before we go through the top 10, we need to mention that California has the highest number of SUV and CUV thefts by state at 3,531 according to the NICB analysis. When examined by core-based statistical area, New York - Northern New Jersey - Long Island posted the most thefts with 2,530.

In terms of the vehicle class, compact-sized CUVs are the main preference for car thieves with 6,981 theft reports, while mid-sized SUVs (555) and pickup trucks (53) are the least tempting propositions. After the Golden State, SUV hijacking is most popular in Florida (1,897), Michigan (1,834), Texas (1,686) and New York (1,577).

No, we're not finished yet, so bare with us a little longer before we tell you which are those top 10 most stolen SUVs and crossovers in the United States. As a teaser, we'll mention that no European-made vehicle made the list, while American-built cars are favored over Asian rivals.

Starting with the three most looted four-wheeled goods, these are the Ford Escape (1,421 thefts), Ford Edge (1,140) and Ford Explorer (958). Gee, we're not sure if U.S. car thieves are all head over heels for modern Blue Oval models, but that's saying something, alright. On the 4th position, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has been reported stolen 958 times between 2010 and 2013, while the Kia Sorento lands a respectable 5th with 725 thefts.

The Chevrolet Traverse (720 thefts), Nissan Rogue (695), Honda CR-V (688), Toyota RAV-4 (665) and Chevrolet Equinox (648) round up the NCIB's top 10 list regarding the most stolen sport utility and crossover vehicles in the United States of America. So what conclusions can we draw up from the presented statistics?

Well, it seems like just as SUVs and CUVs have become a popular choice for consumers over the last years, car thieves have changed their preferences as well to keep up with industry trends. While CUV thefts rose 31 percent compared to the previous NCIB report, SUV thefts have decreased by 25 percentage points. Out of the 21,711 thefts reported these past years, 13 percent of stolen cars remain uncovered to this day.
