There’s a Red Scorpion on the Hood of This Fiat 124 Abarth

Fiat is not exactly the go-to manufacturer for high profile cars, but the Italians do get some things right from time to time. Like the 124 Spider, one of the most exciting and at the same time affordable two passenger roadster.

Sure, that may be because the 124 is essentially a rebodied Mazda MX-5, the most successful roadster of all time, and it is even produced by the Japanese, but still there’s a certain Fiat-allure to it that other of the company's cars lack.

In 2019, the Italian carmaker celebrates its 120th anniversary, and its performance division Abarth turns 70, so a special version of the 124 Abarth has just been presented.

Abarth’s image has been for years a scorpion, an arachnid that is well represented on the company’s logo. But as of now, an even larger scorpion can be fitted in the hood to properly mark the celebration.

The Fiat 124 Spider usually starts at $25,390, but for an extra $395 you can get a scorpion hood decal, and side stripes in Rosso red. These minor modifications are pompously called Scorpion Sting Appearance Group.

“Every Fiat 124 Spider comes standard with turbocharged open-air fun,” said in a statement Tim Kuniskis, FCA head of Alfa Romeo.

“The Scorpion Sting Appearance Group gives the roadster head-turning presence and yet another way to customize the fun-to-drive Fiat 124 Spider Abarth.”

Other than that, nothing changes in the 124 Abarth. Under the hood is the same 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder engine that develops 164 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft., and controlling it is the same choice between a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

There are now three variants of the 124 on the market, namely Classica, Lusso and Abarth, each with its own particular appointments.

As a side note, Abarth’s logo was chosen as a nod to its founder, Karl Abarth, whose astrological sign was Scorpio.
