Food-selling vans are not a new thing around and you can’t say you weren’t running towards the ice cream one in your childhood. But vans that sell sweet cold deserts are not alone and you can now see others stuffed with cakes, bagels, burgers, hot dogs and even pizza.
Speaking of the latter, the guys over at autofocus just discovered the biggest and most advanced pizza truck we know to exist at the moment. It’s not in Italy as you might think though, with its common operating zone being Winnipeg, Canada.
It’s called Red Ember and it belongs to entrepreneur and chef Steffen Zinn, who decided to do something more special than others regarding on-site food cooking and delivery.
First thing first, he took the biggest truck he could find that will still be able to cope with city streets - a 2002 Freightliner FL70. Then he grabbed a CAD program and started redesigning the cargo space to accommodate food making utilities.
It comes with everything you need in a professional kitchen plus a powerful gas-wood oven, a street-level counter, a huge flat screen menu board and a system to announce customers when their pizza is ready.
The oven can cook about 120 10-inch-diameter pizza per hour, with one being ready in as little as one and a half minute. And no, this is not one of those vans rolling around with frozen pizza boxes only too heat them a bit before selling.
No sir, Zinn has put up a nice little team that actually makes pizza from scratch in the red truck, comprising the Pit Girl, the Dough Puncher, First Topper, Second Topper and the Oven Man.
Local suppliers provide Zinn everything for the Red Ember to operate. You can usually find it parked on Broadway, near the Manitoba Legislative Building or at the St. Norbert Farmer’s Market. The average pizza costs CA$12 and their record at lunch our stands at 492 units delivered.
