Having a road sign reading "There still are kids to run over, you can accelerate" installed in a village may seem shocking to some, but it appears like this is a last-resort attempt from the mayor of Breteniere, Cote-d'Or, France.
Mayor Herve Bruyere says that he knows the message on the road sign may look disturbing for some of the 800 inhabitants of Breteniere. He hopes that its rather gloomy message will be more successful than the "Watch out for our children" previously installed and completely ignored.
Before this sign was installed in late 2014, the local authorities have tried a lot of other things. A roundabout, limiting speed to 30 km/h (18 mph), modified right of way, and speed bumps, everything has been tested, but the results have been modest.
A big sector of the street in Breteniere is straight, and this seems to be one of the causes road users are not slowing down. The idea is not entirely new, as it looks like similar road signs and messages have been used before in France, in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais zone, as caradisiac reports.
