This March, Tesla unveiled its future mass-market electric sedan, but one day ahead of that, the stores were already open to take registrations from those who were in a hurry.
And they had every reason to be if they wanted to count among the first to get their hands on the Model 3 when it eventually comes out. Tesla made it very clear from the beginning that the company employees will be priority number one, and then deliveries will start in batches beginning with the US West Coast and then moving East from there.

Also, the time of the registration would be very important as well, so early birds who camped outside the stores will be rewarded for their effort. Apart from region and time of reservation, there was a third parameter to consider, and that is whether the person owns other Tesla models or not.

Right now, the number of reservations stands at around 373,000, 130k of which happened after the first 24 hours. Tesla has been issuing non-sequential registration numbers, so even though that's the only thing linking people to the car they ordered right now, it doesn't help when trying to determine how far up front they are in the waiting line.

However, if people can hack cars, they can surely find a way into Tesla's prioritization system, right? Well, this almost seems too easy to be true, but so far the numbers seem to add up. So, if you're interested to find out about where you stand and then compare your number with that of others, this is what you must do.

Go to the "My Tesla" page and access its source code (Ctrl+U or just right click and chose the "view page source" option). Then look for (Ctrl+F - Command+F on a Mac) "common_reservation_id." You will be taken to a line where there's a six-digit number, and from what the people who have tried this so far, it appears it is indeed sequential and could point towards the position in the queue.

For example, people who ordered two Model 3s from a store got numbers that are only a few digits apart. Furthermore, the time difference also adds up with people who ordered in the stores having numbers in the 300,000s, while those who waited for the online registrations to open are in the 400,000s. Somebody got one yesterday and received a value in the 477,000s, but it would have helped knowing where he's located and whether he already owns a Tesla.

If you're part of the 373,000 people who placed the $1,000 deposit for a Model 3, it couldn't hurt to check and see where you're standing. You still won't get anything close to a delivery date, but you might at least find some comfort in the idea that there are a few more miserable souls even further down the line.
