Google could soon update Waze with new data to show electric vehicle charging station locations on the map if the feature gets the green light from the Waze team.
Currently listed as “under consideration,” the new feature would technically indicate the closest charging stations for EVs, while also allowing drivers to find these locations on the map along their routes.

Details as to when this feature could go live in Waze aren’t available at this point, but users call for Google to add it as soon as possible because otherwise, they just need to stick with a handful of other apps to find information on charging locations.

One user explains on the Waze suggestion box that they installed no less than 11 different iPhone apps just to make sure they are able to plan their route and find the closest charging locations for the electric car.

I agree and strongly recommend this feature as it will be crucial. In Sweden EV and hybrids, plug in hybrids are exploding. Huge advantage in Europe is that charging standards are not that many,” they say.

I currently have 11 apps on my iPhone (parking, charging, electricity providers) just to manage.

At this point, most EV drivers turn to dedicated apps for such information, but given Waze is currently the number one traffic navigation app, it goes without saying that having all this data in one place is a lot more convenient. But of course, there’s a lot of work to make this happen, albeit given Waze is as Google-owned company, the same data can be used by both Waze and Google Maps on Android and iOS.

For now, Google sticks with minor updates for Waze on the two mobile platforms, so fingers crossed for the next major release to also include EV charging location information, not only for the United States, but also for the rest of the world.
