The Ultimate Convertible Comes in the Shape of a House

Still dreaming of that Aston Martin DB9 Volante you have promised yourself it will be the car you’ll hit the road with and complete that bucket list? Or maybe you’re rather a SL-Class type of fellow, always into the old-school German luxury feeling only a Merc can offer. The SLS AMG with its renown gull-wing doors should do the job too. Well, what would you say if we were to tell you there’s something else that beats all the convertibles?

Sure it won’t help you with any road trip plans, but it could turn you in the coolest guy in the neighborhood. Everybody will want to get in whenever you throw a party and ladies we’ll most likely want to spend the night. Before you start going 50 shades of grey, however, we're not talking about spending the night for any dirty purposes, but to simply admire the sky. In this magical sliding house, spending the night awake just to watch the abundance of stars is totally worth it.

Developed by London-based architect firm dRMM, the project consists of three separate buildings, a main house, garage and a guest wing that work together to the owner’s wishes. Well, sort of.

It appears that, since the owners wanted to be able to grow food, entertain and enjoy the landscape, the innovative residential project includes a motor-driven enclosure, which is able to slide up and down the building’s exterior for the option of coverage or exposure.

According to its creators, the mobile element is 28 meters long and weighs 50 tons. The moving system works through rails that are set into the ground. It allows people to create outdoor living areas only if they so wish for, keeping the house closed otherwise. The unique project was completed in 2009 and has since won several awards including the Royal Institute of British Architects East Awards, “Best New Build” and “Home of the Year” at the Grand Designs Awards.
