The Tom Cruise of the Sea: Explorer Mr Hunt Is Made for Luxury Arctic Cruising

Tom Cruise’s suave, expertly trained and quite deadly Ethan Hunt is perhaps one of his most iconic characters and, at the same time, a staple in the movie industry: the ultimate action hero. This explorer yacht is the naval version of the fictional Mission: Impossible character.

2020 put a damper on all of Hollywood’s plans, most specifically on the release of big tentpole productions. The seventh installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise was among the many casualties so, while fans are still waiting to see Mr. Hunt’s exploits back on the silver screen, how about an exercise of the imagination?

It’s nothing as spectacular as some of the things Tom Cruise does in character, but it does have its merits.

A while back, Boat International ran a contest for the best sketch for an explorer yacht inspired by the Mission: Impossible franchise. Much like architecture, the naval industry can also draw inspiration from the most unlikely sources, so the adventurous, gadget-packed yet still luxurious M:I universe worked just fine.

Slovenian design firm Vom Creations took part in that sketch contest, as well, with an entry called Mr Hunt. Reactions to the sketch were so positive, that the team decided to turn the sketch (which you can find in the gallery attached) into a fully-fledged concept.

Mr Hunt, much like the character whose name it borrows, is sophisticated, incredibly capable, fast and, dare we say it, quite handsome. It is a 190-foot (58-meter) explorer yacht designed for Arctic exploration, so it’s been rendered with a near-vertical plumb bow that would help it break up the ice to advance to its destination, no matter how remote. With an exterior by Jalen Vogelnik and an interior by Gaegon Muric, Mr Hunt was also directly influenced by SS Vega, the first yacht to cross the North-East Passage.

Because it would travel to far-off regions, the need to make Mr Hunt as “green” as possible was paramount. It was also one of the conditions to be met in the sketch contest, precisely for this reason: no one should go exploring the Arctic regions if that meant causing more damage to the environment. As such, Mr Hunt has solar panels on the roof to power hotel loads for the guests and crew. For propulsion, it would use a hydrogen propulsion system.

The three-decked explorer was designed to provide as much open space on the decks as possible. The bow comes with a generous lounge area with a jacuzzi, and there’s another, even bigger, skydeck aft with a secondary jacuzzi and a bar – but this one is accessible from the owner suite and is probably meant as a private area.

Meanwhile, the entire main deck is reserved for housing all those toys a spy worthy of the name might need for a quick getaway and / or a quick and efficient mission at sea. Renders show the expendable platform at the stern would be just perfect for storing a couple of tenders and at least three jet skis – and still have room left to throw in a couple of lounge chairs, so it could work as a beach club.

Accommodation on board is for ten guests in the owner’s suite and four VIP cabins, and for 11 crew. Vom Creations describes the interior as “cosy,” with a sauna and a library, and plenty of natural light and materials. Sadly, no renders of the interior have been released.

“With the owner in mind, we designed an ideal yacht for an Arctic cruise – an explorer that can crush through ice,” the design studio says. “After daily explorations the owner and guests can relax in the sauna, library or bar, which are all featured on board.”
