The Tiny Eco Hotel Is Part Tiny House, Part Boat, All Awesomeness

When it comes to planning your vacation, you don’t have to choose between spending it on land or water. At least, in theory, you don't.

Here is a concept for a floating structure that would boost eco-tourism while also offering the fanciest and most unique accommodation (and views) for guests. It’s called the Tiny Eco Hotel and, as its name suggests, it’s part tiny home (minus the fact that it should be mobile) and part boat. And all-around awesomeness.

It is just one of the many concepts of nautical designer Max Zhivov, whose main focus is proposing viable ideas for more sustainable means of transportation. His take with this one is that you don’t have to destroy the environment you’re admiring, which, duh, should be a given but probably comes last in the mind of people like those who buy cruise tickets.

The Tiny Eco Hotel is comprised of two elements that can operate together or separately: a tiny house on stilts and a boathouse powered by electric motors. It works on any body of water, big or small, from lakes to fjords and bays, and ideally transforms that body of water into a hotel base, but with a minimal footprint. Because the tiny house sits on stilts and is made of wood and other recycled materials, erecting it would have minimal impact.

Speaking of the tiny house, it measures just 4.5 x 3 meters (14.7 x 9.8 feet) and offers accommodation for four people. It would be wrong to assume the type of vacation residence here is of the most luxurious type, but plopped in the right location and with the airiness of the design, it would be the absolute perfect holiday spot.

As such, the tiny home would offer basics in terms of comfort, with emphasis on a design that allows guests to fully take in the views. It would have a kitchen and dining area and a couple of bathrooms, as well as a generous balcony slash terrace just perfect for long afternoons and relaxing mornings. The base could serve for nightly stays, with the guests boarding the boathouse in the morning, Zhivov suggests.

The boathouse is larger, at 4.5 x 10 meters (14.7 x 32.8 feet), and has two decks, one with the actual living space and the upper serving as a sort of beach club/sundeck/private floating garden. We assume the final look of this area, which can be covered with sand, gravel or rock, is up to whoever decides to offer these floating residences for rental, but its overall utility would be as a sundeck.

The main deck is one large open area, with a kitchenette and a bathroom under the stairs and, presumably, place to sleep for the same four guests. The sides are made of colored glass, offering a unique way of experiencing nature and some protection from direct rays from the sun.

The boathouse could spend several days on the water or dock at nightfall, after an entire day of exploring. Docked to the tiny house, the boathouse acts as an extension.

Serving its purpose with minimal disruption to the environment, the boathouse is fully electric. This isn’t a new idea and, as a matter of fact, is already being implemented. Based on these other examples of floating villas, it would be somewhat safe to assume that the Tiny Eco Hotel wouldn’t be exactly fast on water either. These are “boats” only in name; they move at a crawling pace, which just so happens to serve their stated purpose.

“The houseboat is equipped with electric motors so nothing can spoil communication with nature,” Zhivov says. It would also do away with the need for an operator, since it would have “unmanned technology.”

“The tourist going on his day trip can choose a point on the map on his smartphone through the application and travel to this point with help of smart phone,” says the designer. “Or take over the phone control, as in the example of quadcopter control.”

As awesome as all this sounds, for the time being, the Tiny Eco Hotel is the stuff that dreams are made of. It will probably remain consigned to the paper it was drawn on for eternity, but it’s a beautiful dream.
