As part of their BMW stories campaign, the marketing people from Bavaria are traveling the world looking for testimonies of passionate people and their cars. In their latest, they focus on what Josef Bucherl has to say.
You probably never heard of the man but that doesn’t mean that what he did with his passion didn’t make a difference. The 83-year old man was chief instructor and head of the BMW Driving Experience. He started in the 1950s with his first BMW which wasn’t a car but a bike.

His first encounter with the blue and white badge was represented by a BMW 500 R51/2 bike which he used for reliability trials. Then came his first car which was a BMW 700 Sport that was driven in various rallies.

Oh yes, our good man was a proper racer and then got invited by the company to show them a thing or two. This is how special driving training programs got born, Josef being a policeman that trained his coworkers on how to be better behind the wheel.

BMW thought that wouldn’t be a bad idea for their potential customers and invited our good man to do the same for them. His trick was that he could do that both on bikes and cars.

Of course, the Nurburgring was chosen as the perfect playing field. After 40 years of service as part of the police force, Josef was asked to join BMW and head the driver training program, an opportunity he took and that’s how he ended up becoming something close to a legend in Munich.

Today we celebrate his story. What is yours?
