The Stig Belongs to BBC

With all the intrigue usually associated with big media companies the size of the BBC, it's hard to tell whether a story is for real or its just another stunt created from scratch to generate addition audience ratings. In the case of the now snowballing “Stig wants to publish autobiography, BBC won't let him” story, a new element surfaced today: Andy Wilman, the producer of the Top Gear show. In a long, long epic posted on the official website of the show, Wilman slams the book and the company which plans to publish it, HarperCollins. The point of the long long epic is however standing out right from the title of the piece written by Wilman: “The Stig. He's Ours.”
Although trying to hint that the guy in the white suit who has been captured one too many times on Google Streetview belongs to us as in me, you, and just about anyone who knows anything about Top Gear, we doubt that's what he meant.

The Stig belongs to BBC. Legally. And, more than that, morally.

“The ramshackle, dysfunctional family that is the Top Gear team, from the newest runner right up to Jeremy, Richard and James, has worked bloody hard for many years to make the Stig something worth caring about, and that includes protecting it from a bunch of chancers,” Wilman writes with passion.

Is Wilman on the right side with this one? Sure. Top Gear worked hard and they should have the Stig, so that they can share him with us once a week.

Is BBC right on taking legal action against HarperCollins and then making such a big fuss about it? Yes on the legal action part, no on the big fuss part.

Nobody knew until recently who the Stig was. Anyone of us could have claimed we're the Stig and that wouldn't have changed a damn thing. Hell, Michael Schumacher was presented as the Stig and nobody fell for it...
