The Spot on Hamilton's Face

We're not sure what's up with this Lewis Hamilton portrait craze going on these days, but it seems to have taken over the world. Days after a British artist was commissioned to draw a huge portrait of the F1 driver using nothing but paint and remote control cars, another portrait news has hit the web today.

Ms. Douthwaite, an artist from Manchester just finished another unusual portrait of racecar driver Lewis Hamilton. This isn't a painting as one might expect and has more to do with a puzzle. She used a technique of “painting” that consisted of millions of tiny dots of different colors being applied to the canvas. No brush strokes here! Just tiny specks of color, patiently laid out one after the other to form Hamilton's “visage” on the 8ft by 5ft piece of canvas.

We are quite amazed at the success the Brit is having among the artistic world. Granted, he is a good looking, successful young chap, but let's face it, he hasn't got the most beautiful face out there (although in the racing world there isn't a very stiff competition). It's not like he's got some nice chiseled Byronic features that have the ladies going gah-gah.

This particular painting took 12 weeks to make and, as the artist herself pointed out, was inspired by the “pointilism” work of 19th century French painter Georges-Pierre Seurat. The point behind that method is that if you lay dots of different colors together closely, the eye will perceive the image as a whole. But Ms. Douthwaite decided to bring a little variation to the whole thing, and instead of paint, she used tiny pieces of colored paper.

The reason behind choosing the British driver comes in the artist's own words: “I am a massive Formula 1 fan and I have been since I was a little girl. And I've always supported McLaren”. We don't know anything about that, but one thing is for sure: Hamilton sure got a lot of talented fans out there!
